Updated: September 2026
Delhi has introduced a major change in its rooftop solar policy. Eligible residential consumers can get the benefit of a government-supported rooftop solar system of up to 3 kW, subject to eligibility and technical feasibility.
Up to 3 kW Rooftop Solar
Government-supported installation for eligible Delhi households.
Under the revised Delhi Solar Energy Policy, eligible domestic electricity consumers with average monthly electricity consumption of up to 400 units can receive the benefit of rooftop solar up to 3 kW under the new government-supported model.
The scheme is designed to reduce the upfront financial burden of installing rooftop solar for eligible households.
The Delhi Government has announced a target of approximately 2.30 lakh households and around 500 MW additional rooftop solar capacity by March 2027.
For a 3 kW residential rooftop solar system, the Central Government’s PM Surya Ghar support is ₹78,000.
The revised Delhi model provides an additional ₹78,000 support from the Delhi Government.
Central Government Support: ₹78,000
Delhi Government Support: ₹78,000
Total Combined Support: ₹1,56,000
The Delhi Government has also announced additional support to cover the applicable difference between the subsidy and the tendered cost of the solar plant.
Important: ₹1,56,000 should not be understood as ₹1,56,000 cash automatically transferred to the customer’s bank account. It represents the combined Central and Delhi Government subsidy/support.
For eligible households under the new government-supported model, the scheme is designed so that the customer does not have to arrange the full installation cost upfront.
Government subsidy and additional support are used to support the applicable project cost.
However, this does not mean that every Delhi resident automatically qualifies or that every electricity bill will become zero.
Not necessarily.
Rooftop solar can significantly reduce the electricity purchased from the grid. However, the final electricity bill depends on:
Net metering allows eligible rooftop solar consumers to export surplus electricity to the electricity grid through the applicable metering system.
The revised Delhi policy has reported a reduction in the residential net-metering processing timeline from around 75 days to 25 days, subject to the applicable process and approvals.
The Delhi Government has stated that existing electricity subsidy benefits will continue for eligible consumers.
Remember that solar subsidy and electricity bill subsidy are two different things.
The government programme includes five years of operation and maintenance support for systems installed under the applicable programme.
This may include maintenance-related support such as panel cleaning and rectification of covered system faults according to the applicable vendor arrangement.
This should not be interpreted as lifetime free maintenance.
A 3 kW rooftop solar system can generate a significant amount of electricity throughout the year.
Public reporting around the Delhi scheme has referred to approximately 300 units per month as an indicative generation figure.
Actual generation depends on sunlight, roof direction, shading, weather, panels, inverter, system design and installation quality.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Location | Delhi |
| Consumer | Residential / Domestic |
| Maximum Solar Capacity | Up to 3 kW |
| Consumption Criteria | Average monthly consumption up to 400 units |
| Central Support | ₹78,000 |
| Delhi Government Support | ₹78,000 |
| Combined Support | ₹1,56,000 |
| Maintenance | 5 years under applicable government programme |
| Target Households | Approximately 2.30 lakh |
| Additional Capacity Target | 500 MW |
| Target | March 2027 |
Eligible Delhi residential electricity consumers with average monthly consumption up to 400 units may qualify, subject to technical feasibility and other scheme conditions.
The announced Central and Delhi capital subsidy/support together total ₹1.56 lakh for a 3 kW system. It should not be described as a direct ₹1.56 lakh cash payment to the customer.
Under the new government-supported model, eligible households are not expected to arrange the full installation cost upfront, subject to applicable programme conditions.
Not necessarily. Solar can substantially reduce electricity consumption from the grid, but the final bill depends on generation, consumption, net metering and applicable charges and subsidies.
The applicable government programme provides five years of operation and maintenance support for installed systems.
No. Eligibility and technical feasibility must be checked before installation.
