Delhi 3 kW Solar Scheme 2026: Free Rooftop Solar & ₹1.56 Lakh Subsidy

Delhi has introduced a major change in its rooftop solar policy. Eligible residential consumers can get the benefit of a government-supported rooftop solar system of up to 3 kW, subject to eligibility and technical feasibility.

What is the New Delhi 3 kW Solar Scheme?

Under the revised Delhi Solar Energy Policy, eligible domestic electricity consumers with average monthly electricity consumption of up to 400 units can receive the benefit of rooftop solar up to 3 kW under the new government-supported model.

The scheme is designed to reduce the upfront financial burden of installing rooftop solar for eligible households.

The Delhi Government has announced a target of approximately 2.30 lakh households and around 500 MW additional rooftop solar capacity by March 2027.

How Much Subsidy is Available for 3 kW Solar?

For a 3 kW residential rooftop solar system, the Central Government’s PM Surya Ghar support is ₹78,000.

The revised Delhi model provides an additional ₹78,000 support from the Delhi Government.

The Delhi Government has also announced additional support to cover the applicable difference between the subsidy and the tendered cost of the solar plant.

Important: ₹1,56,000 should not be understood as ₹1,56,000 cash automatically transferred to the customer’s bank account. It represents the combined Central and Delhi Government subsidy/support.

Is 3 kW Solar Completely Free?

For eligible households under the new government-supported model, the scheme is designed so that the customer does not have to arrange the full installation cost upfront.

Government subsidy and additional support are used to support the applicable project cost.

However, this does not mean that every Delhi resident automatically qualifies or that every electricity bill will become zero.

Will My Electricity Bill Become Zero?

Not necessarily.

Rooftop solar can significantly reduce the electricity purchased from the grid. However, the final electricity bill depends on:

• Solar generation
• Household electricity consumption
• Net metering
• Fixed charges
• Applicable taxes and charges
• Electricity subsidy eligibility

What is Net Metering?

Net metering allows eligible rooftop solar consumers to export surplus electricity to the electricity grid through the applicable metering system.

The revised Delhi policy has reported a reduction in the residential net-metering processing timeline from around 75 days to 25 days, subject to the applicable process and approvals.

Will Delhi Electricity Subsidy Continue?

The Delhi Government has stated that existing electricity subsidy benefits will continue for eligible consumers.

Remember that solar subsidy and electricity bill subsidy are two different things.

Is Maintenance Free?

The government programme includes five years of operation and maintenance support for systems installed under the applicable programme.

This may include maintenance-related support such as panel cleaning and rectification of covered system faults according to the applicable vendor arrangement.

This should not be interpreted as lifetime free maintenance.

How Much Electricity Does a 3 kW Solar System Generate?

A 3 kW rooftop solar system can generate a significant amount of electricity throughout the year.

Public reporting around the Delhi scheme has referred to approximately 300 units per month as an indicative generation figure.

Actual generation depends on sunlight, roof direction, shading, weather, panels, inverter, system design and installation quality.
